Tegan and Sara Return With “Closer”

I can see myself being friends with Tegan and Sara. We’d have sushi dinners together then head back to one of our houses and watch Britney Spears concert DVD’s with a homemade cocktail in hand. That, or we’d go to Applebee’s and split a sampler platter.

All I know for sure is, they’re back and in dance mode. Now, when I read that they were going to have a dance-pop sound I rolled my eyes and smacked my lips together, but after listening to the track, it’s real cute. It’s light and the synths make it sound authentically 80’s, not try-hard 80’s like a lot of artists who say their sound is 80’s inspired and sounds nothing like the 80’s. Say 80’s again…

“Closer” is the first track released from their forthcoming album due January 2013. The Canadian twins are currently on tour with The Black Keys and are set to open for The Killer’s.

I love them and the song. In terms of where the song’s theme comes from, Tegan revealed to Rolling Stone,”‘In short, I was writing about my youth – a time when we got closer by linking arms and walking down our school hallway, or talked all night on the telephone about every thought or experience we’d ever had. It wasn’t necessarily even about hooking up or admitting your feelings back then. In fact, that rarely happened. It was the anticipation of something maybe happening that was truly exciting and satisfying. We were perpetually getting closer, yet we rarely got physical with one another, if ever.'”
